When Should the First Dental Treatment Be?

Primary teeth begin to erupt in the mouth approximately 6 months after birth, and the eruption of 20 primary teeth is completed by the age of 2.5-3 years. These teeth play a crucial role in important functions such as nutrition and speech in children.

Pedodontists, or pediatric dentists, aim to ensure the healthy maintenance of both primary and permanent teeth in children aged 0-13, as well as to address issues caused by cavities, trauma, hereditary factors, and similar influences. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that the first dental examination be conducted after the first tooth erupts (usually between 6 months and 1 year).   During the dental examination, pediatric dentists use a mirror and light to examine all of the child's teeth. They perform all necessary fillings, root canal treatments, and amputation procedures on primary and young permanent teeth. Parents are also informed about nutrition and preventive practices, which are among the most important aspects of oral care. While performing all these preventive and therapeutic procedures, one of the top priorities is to ensure that the child is treated without fear, anxiety, or pain. Additionally, the child's overall dental and jaw health, as well as their growth and development, are examined.
